After seeing Pomeranz, I go with him.

He’s risen from his pre-season stance, but he’s still a late single-digits pick. Think rounds 8-12 if he’s signable.

His tools are average or below across the board, and he’s probably a fourth or fifth outfielder at best, but there are some things to like. His hit tool is his best feature, and he’s got some pop, but he’s a below-average runner, fringe-average fielder and below-average thrower, meaning he might be limited to left field and first base.

His fastball is above-average due to movement, despite the velocity being roughly average most of the time. He can pump up the velo to be plus if he wants to, but it cuts down on the movement and his command of it. Currently his movement is better than his command, though some places like to say his command is plus. It’s more of the average variety, though he can sometimes place it perfectly.

I think he’s better described as a #2/3 starter, someone that will have some very good years, but should settle in to be a slightly above-average pitcher when compared to the league for a number of years. I like his mechanics and his athleticism, which bodes well for his durability if he isn’t run into the ground this year and in his early years of pro ball. He should move very quickly in the minors.

He’s probably dropped from last year, mainly due to his issues behind the plate. When I saw on Friday, he was bigger than he was last year, and I don’t mean that in a good way. He was never the most athletic player, but he looks more like a future reserve than a regular now.

On the hitting side, I think he’s struggling to see the ball right now. His pitch recognition wasn’t very good against Grimm, and I’m told that’s been the issue all year. He might be in a position to come back to school for his senior year.

I get a lot of reports, especially about the early round players, and they can be as glowing or more so than my own reports about players. It’s about gauging the general interest in a player, ignoring my own personal likes and dislikes. Every scout has their own personal tastes, and I know that I’m not as qualified as they are, so I trust the general feelings I’m given about players.

I’m as bullish as anyone on Sale, as I think he’s one of the few potential middle of the order hitters in this draft. Unlike some places, I do believe he should be tried in right field until he proves he can’t handle it, as you don’t want to shove him in left field until you have to. His arm and range are good enough to handle right field right now, and even though he might slow a bit, I trust his instincts as a player.

The only thing I worry about with him is his overwhelming desire to lift weights at such a young age, and I’m afraid he’ll age prematurely into a Jeff Bagwell type of player that has no defensive value.
